Markthalle (Indoor and Outdoor Market Place)
The City Market Place was designed by August Butsch in 1894 in the Neo-Renaissance style under the project name "Markthalle für Sarajevo". The market was opened in 1895 and to this day it maintains its original purpose.
Location: Old Town
This monumental building was best described by an eminent historian and one of the leading "biographers” of Sarajevo, Hamdija Kresevljakovic: "The Markthalle building resembles rather a theatre than a place where vegetables and meat are sold”.

The Outdoor Market is located just across the street.  The first electric rails in Europe were passing in front of this Market. Thus, Sarajevo has became the first city in Central Europe, Balkans and Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, to have a full-time electric tram in 1905.
