The National Theatre is located at the former Country House/Clubhouse, built in 1899 according to design of Karl Pařík. The building employs the Neo-Renaissance style with elements of Classicism.
Location: Old Town
Due to its disposition and structure, one of the first city squares in Sarajevo was formed in front of the National Theatre.
During the Austro-Hungarian period, the Theatre was a venue where singers, musicians performed, or officers gathered for famous Officers’ Balls. Gentlemen’s Club headquarters were located here as well. The National Theatre opened in 1921. Ever since then, the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera, Ballet and Theatre have been operating within this building. The Theatre has hosted artists and ensembles from all over the world. The National Theatre Square is the main stage of the Sarajevo Film Festival. If you do not want to miss out on world known actors, actresses and directors, this is the must-be site during the Festival.
