Kursumlija Madrasah
Kursumlija Madrasah is the Secondary Islamic School. It was built in 1537 as one of the Ghazi Husrev-Bey’s endowments and is dedicated to his mother, Selçuka, a Turkish princess and a daughter of Sultan Bayezid II.
Location: Old Town
At the time, it was one of the best European universities. People called it "Kursumlija” (due to its lead roof; tur. kursum - lead). The Madrasah reflects a magnificent design of that period, with central atrium surrounded by porches, pillars and twelve classrooms (tur. dershana - classroom). Each room is under a dome and has its own fireplace. A fountain decorates the Hellenistic courtyard, and the entire structure serves as an art exhibitions venue.
